Minamoto no Taikawa Saiaiko

Born in 1155 AD, Minamoto no Taikawa Saiaiko calls the imperial city of Heian-kyo (Kyoto) her home. Saiaiko, as she is known to friends, serves Sir Ogami Akira on campaign and in support of his clan, Yama Kaminari. Saiaiko has based her persona loosely on the lives and legend of Tomoe Gozen, general and consort (gozen) of Minamoto no Yoshinaka, and Eshun, Buddhist nun (zenni), of the late Heian era (jidai).

Saiaiko is currently engaged in many projects including formal Heian court and working garb, Asuka period garb, sake brewing, calligraphy, illumination, outlandish fighting clothes and boots, o-yoroi armor, and a buke yashiki (samurai house), as well as making Viking garb for her teacher, THL Solveig Throndardottir, and armor for her page, Moira Caithness. This involves learning period crafts including ceramics, wood working, leather working, metal working, metal casting, period painting, resist dyeing, etc. She has recieved her Award of Arms from Robin & Isabeau, and was made a companion of The Sycamore by TRMs Christopher & Morgen for her love of the martial and creative arts.

Saiaiko is proud to be squired to Sir Ogami Akira, daimyo of Clan Yama Kaminari (E03 at Pennsic). She is also an eager student of THL Solveig Throndardottir, an acknowledged expert on feudal Japanese arts. In Saiaiko's service is a page by the name of Moira, daughter of Rowena Caithness, who is showing an early aptitude for warfare.

She is also web mistress of the Clan Yama Kaminari and the Aethelmearc's College of Scribes websites (opens in a new window).
